Metro to Install Cables to Improve Radio and Wireless Technology

metro tunnel for slider 450x280Metro announced it will begin its project to install radio cable along 100 miles of tunnel walls throughout the entire underground system.

According to a news release the cable will help improve radio coverage for Metro and the regions first responders. The cables will also help improve wireless coverage within Metro’s tunnels.

“We are looking for every opportunity to move this project along efficiently and to deliver incremental benefits as we complete each segment and turn it over to the telecom providers,” Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said.

Metro has already started on engineering and production tests in a 6,000 foot tunnel segment between Glenmont and Forest Glen to develop project design specifications. Wiedefeld has also directed an outside expert to review Metro’s design and implementation plan in order to fast-track the project schedule.

The news release also states that Metro has secured new agreements with major wireless carriers to use Metro-managed workers to install cable for both cellular and radio systems at the same time. Metro will be installing dual radio and cellular cables, known as coaxial.

“Many partners are supporting Metro’s effort to deliver these improvements, and I want to thank Metro’s Congressional delegation, Congressman John Mica and the Council of Governments especially for their leadership,” Wiedefeld said.

The estimated cost of the project is $120 million and a portion of the underground work will be funded through Metro’s capital improvement plan.
