Riderwood to Host Presentation by Dr. Jacquelyn Serwer of Smithsonian Institution

As part of its month-long celebration of African American History, Riderwood retirement community will host Dr. Jacquelyn Days Serwer, Chief Curator of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).
Dr. Serwer will provide an update on the purpose, history and future of the new museum that is currently under construction at the National Mall and scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.
The event will take place in the Erickson Living retirement community’s Encore Theater (Lakeside Commons Clubhouse) on Thursday, February 25 at 2pm. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Riderwood Diversity & Inclusion Committee and the African American History Club.
Dr. Serwer joined the NMAAHC in May, 2006. Beyond planning for the opening, she focuses on building the museum’s foundational collection and developing exhibition projects. Previously, she served for six years as Chief Curator of the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She received her M.A. from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. from the City University of New York. Her career as a museum professional began at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
According to its website, the National Museum of African American History and Culture will be a place where all Americans can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience, what it means to their lives and how it helped us shape this nation. It will be a place that transcends the boundaries of race and culture that divide us, and becomes a lens into a story that unites us all.
