Thanksgiving Parade Set for Nov. 21 in Silver Spring (VIDEO)

The local holiday season kicks off on Saturday, November 21 with the 18th annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade in Downtown Silver Spring. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street in Downtown Silver Spring. Traveling the same route as previous years, the parade will proceed south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue.

ABC7 Meterologist Brian Van De Graaff will serve as master of ceremonies introducing more than 100 parade units. Expect Thanksgiving floats, marching bands and large inflatables. Live performances include “The Nutcracker” by the Maryland Youth Ballet. As in past years, the parade ends with elves, reindeer and Santa’s sleigh.

New this year on Veterans Plaza is a place to take family holiday photos with “Frozen’s” inflatable Elsa, a 10-foot tall turkey, or with Hanukkah or Christmas décor. All parade selfies marked with the hashtag #MoCoThanksParade will be broadcast on the jumbotron at Ellsworth and Fenton on the parade route.

Free parking will be available in public garages, including the Wayne Avenue Garage, the Sligo Avenue Garage, the Cameron Street Garage, and the Bonifant Street Garage next to Metro. The Ellsworth Town Center garage is closed that day. Parade goers are encouraged to take the Metro Red Line to the Silver Spring station, just west of Georgia Avenue, across from the Discovery building.

The parade will be held rain or shine and will be broadcast live on NewsChannel 8. The telecast will be repeated on Thanksgiving Day.
