UPDATED: WSSC Fixes Broken Main, Water Service Restored

UPDATED Oct. 15, 7:40 a.m. WSSC reports all road repairs will be complete by 8 a.m. on Thursday.

UPDATED Oct. 14, 12:12 p.m. WSSC reports that the 16-inch water main has been repaired and water service has been restored to customers.

Road repairs are now underway on Rockville Pike at Cedar Lane in Bethesda. According to a WSSC news release, paving crews are expected to work through tonight’s rush hour, keeping at least one lane open both north and southbound.

The 74-year-old cast iron pipe broke Tuesday afternoon and left about 250 customers without water. Repairs to the pipe were completed around noon today.

According to WSSC, it is common for customers to experience discolored water following a water main break in their area. Cold water taps should be run for five minutes to allow the discolored water to flush out.

ORIGINAL POST Repairs are still underway on a broken 16-inch water main at Rockville Pike and Cedar Lane in Bethesda near the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission officials (WSSC).

The 74-year-old cast iron pipe broke on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. Approximately 250 customers are without water service because of the break. WSSC plans to set up a water station for customers at the Stone Ridge School,9101 Rockville Pike. The school plans to open two hours late today because of the water main break.

Repairs are expected to last into the morning commute and that means lane closures. As of this morning, only one northbound lane and two southbound lanes between Cedar Lane and Pooks Hill Road on Rockville Pike are open to traffic. Commuters are advised to use alternate routes and to avoid the area if at all possible.

Once repairs are completed, water service will be restored. The Maryland State Highway Administration plans to then assess and repave the road.
