Roger Berliner Disappointed by Decision of BOE on Early Voting Center Location
In response to the Montgomery County Board of Elections’ decision to replace the Jane E. Lawton Community Recreation Center for the Potomac Community Center as an early voting location for the 2016 elections, Montgomery County Councilmember Roger Berliner today issued the following statement:
“I am deeply disappointed with the decision by the Montgomery County Board of Elections (BOE) to approve the switch from the Jane E. Lawton Community Recreation Center to the Potomac Community Center as a western down county early voting location for the 2016 elections. This decision by the County Board is not in the public interest. It is a purely partisan decision, designed to give greater advantage to Republican voters in the suburbs and make it more difficult for down county Democrats. Our only goal should be expanding the number of voters, not partisan agendas.
“The Lawton Center has been the only western down county early voting site in Montgomery County surrounded by a dense community and housing approximately 80,000 residents. During the 2014 elections, the Lawton Center was able to allow 2,187 residents to vote early during the primary and 3,355 residents to vote early for the general election. Additionally, the Lawton Center has been serving nearly 40,000 people who work in downtown Bethesda. This has enabled our residents to have convenient access during work hours to an early voting site. The Potomac location is more residential, further away from the Bethesda urban core, and poses a challenge to access the location during the weekday daytime.
“I will continue to fight to ensure that Montgomery County residents get the most convenient and accessible early voting sites in the State.”
