MCM, CCM, MCTV, Rockville 11 Receive NATOA Awards
The National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) honored the winners of the 30th Annual Government Programming Awards (GPA) on Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego, California. The NATOA awards program honors excellence in broadcast, cable, multimedia and electronic programming produced by local government agencies.
According to a news release, this year NATOA received 800 entries, up more than 10 percent from the previous year, submitted by local governments across the country.
“Our GPA winners continue to demonstrate excellence in programming and we are thrilled to honor and celebrate their achievements,” said NATOA President Tony Perez. “We congratulate these winners for actively supporting community programming’s role in building stronger, more connected communities.”
Montgomery Community Media (MCM) received three awards at the ceremony including 2nd place for its use of social media, 3rd place for its “County Executive Candidate Forum” election show and an honorable mention award for its “Meet the Mayors” show in the category of public affairs.
“The NATOA awards are among the most prestigious public, education, and government [PEG] media awards in the country,” said Merlyn Reineke, executive director of MCM and the chair of the county’s PEG governing board. “We are proud that Montgomery County is so well represented this year across so many categories.”
This is the second year in a row that MCM was recognized with an award for it use of social media by NATOA.
“For MCM to have been counted among the top social media providers in the entire country, pitted against much larger and better funded social media teams is a great testament to how cutting-edge MCM’s platform services have become,” said Reineke. “I hope MCM can serve as an example to other community media centers about how they can fulfill their missions beyond traditional cable television by expansion into social media activities.”
Several other PEG stations were honored with NATOA awards this year. Montgomery College TV (MCTV) received 2nd place for excellence in programming, the city of Rockville received 2nd place for its Summer Camp promo, County Cable Montgomery (CCM) received an honorable mention for its use of social media and for its “Made in Montgomery” and “Plan It Montgomery” television shows.
“The large number of NATOA awards received this year by the Montgomery County PEGs again illustrate that there is no other jurisdiction in the country producing more diverse and better quality programming,” Reineke said. “We hope residents of Montgomery County will take time to watch and enjoy all the programming and online content being produced by their local PEG organizations.”
