USG Welcomes Six New Board Members, Names New Chair

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) announces the addition of six new members to the USG Board of Advisors, a formally constituted body established under the auspices of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

The new USG board members include:

• Daniel Abdun-Nabi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Emergent BioSolutions Inc.
• Jay Clarke, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain Operations of Total Wine and More.
• John Kenyon, Senior Vice President of Engineering Staff for Hughes Network Systems.
• Roya Mohadjer, Senior Strategic Planner and IS&GS STEM Leader for Lockheed Martin.
• Michael O’Brien, Global Head of Corporate Communications for MedImmune.
• Larry E. Walker, Principal of The Walker Group.

In addition to the appointment of the new members, the USG Board of Advisors also voted to approve a new slate of executive officers. Serving as the new board chair will be John Sackett, President of the Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center and Chief Operating Officer of Adventist HealthCare. The board’s two new vice-chairs will include Steve Hull, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Bethesda Magazine, and Michael Knapp, Co-founder of Skillsmart and a former Montgomery County Councilmember.

The principal responsibility of the USG board is to represent broad community interest and to ensure that student, business, local and state government, and higher education needs are being addressed. The board also provides advice and support to USG’s executive director and provides guidance on strategic development and implementation that includes the following areas: program identification, advocacy, fundraising, cooperation and partnership building, marketing and promotion, financial and facilities planning, and evaluation and assessment.

“The USG Board of Advisors is essential in helping us to further connect with students, faculty, and administrators, as well as with business and industry leaders throughout the region. They provide invaluable service and counsel to USG and we are thrilled to welcome these outstanding new members to the board,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, Executive Director of The Universities at Shady Grove and Associate Vice Chancellor for the University System of Maryland.
