Free Rockville Camp Helps Youth Through Theater (PHOTOS)
Team of Starts, a program in Rockville part of the nonprofit Project Change, is offering a free summer camp program to teens who qualify for FARMS- Montgomery County Public School free and reduced meal program.
Camp is from June 29 to July 30 and runs Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Debra Kramer, program director of Team of Stars, said it teaches youth- sixth through rising ninth graders- positive skills through musical theater.
She said students must commit to five weeks of camp that ends with an original musical theater production written by the students showcased at the Cast Party for the families.
Each year, according to Kramer, teens will choose a theme and have a conversation about it during circle time.
“For example, this year they will talk about the events in Baltimore,” Kramer said.
A typical day during camp will include dance, music, theater, gym, dialogue circles, stagecraft, and interactive art activities that focus on leadership and anti-bullying. Students also talk about issues such as drugs, alcohol, bullying, gangs, fears, prejudice.
Kramer said the program is also open to children who do not qualify for FARMS at a low fee. Free transportation is available for children of the House Opportunity Commission program. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided.
According to a news release, Team of Starts is on its fifth year and is funded by Community Foundation of Montgomery County and private donors. The program serves 100 children every year.
