Gaithersburg Earns Partnership Award

The Maryland Community Action Partnership recognized collaboration efforts within the City of Gaithersburg with a Partnership Award. 

Gaithersburg was recognized as being an exceptional partner with the regional Montgomery County Community Action Agency, especially in support of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This year the Gaithersburg VITA location processed 481 tax returns for qualifying area residents, who collectively received $669,283 in federal and state refunds. Additionally, the city helped coordinate Super VITA Tax Day on March 28, at which more than 60 eligible residents received free tax assistance in a single day.

The City was also recognized for partnering with the Montgomery County Community Action Agency to host a public forum in January about poverty in the county, bringing together stakeholders and service providers to discuss the most important issues impacting low-income residents. The City of Gaithersburg provided the venue and helped promote the event to its Coalition of Providers, a vast network of nonprofit and faith-based organizations that meets regularly to share information and resources.

“Working within the community to establish partnerships and leverage our collective talents and resources allows the City to maximize support for our residents,” said Maureen Herndon, Community Services Division Manager. “No single entity can provide all of the tools, education and support necessary to help residents working towards financial stability, so it’s imperative that we seek partners to work together strategically and creatively to make an impact. The City is delighted to be part of that collaborative equation.”
