Jim Farrell, a work force leader with the city of Gaithersburg’s Department of Public Works, was named Groundskeeper of the Year by the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches. The award was presented at a ceremony in the Camden Yards Warehouse in Baltimore on February 7th.
A thirty-three year veteran with the City of Gaithersburg, Farrell handles ball field maintenance for twelve municipal fields. Working with staff from the Department of Public Works and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture, he coordinates lining, dragging, painting, fertilizing and more to get the fields ready for play for whatever sport will be played on them.
“I have many staff members that help make the fields look great every day,” said Farrell. “I enjoy making the Little League players feel like they are playing on a Major League field.”
“Jim always takes get pride in his work and does an outstanding job of making Gaithersburg look great throughout the County and State of Maryland with great looking fields,” said Mark Scafide, public works operations division chief.
The Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches is a not-for-profit organization that works to develop and promote amateur baseball and its players, coaches and parents. The organization provides a forum for coaches to share information and provides opportunities for player development and promotion through organized clinics and recognition events.
