Icy Day Could Chip Away MCPS Students’ Summer Vacation
Enjoy that snow day today students, because according to the Montgomery County Public Schools calendar you’re going to have to give the day back in June.
MCPS Spokesman Dana Tofig told MyMCMedia Monday that today is the first non-built-in snow day, meaning this one triggers the school system’s contingency plan. But, with a forecast later this week for more wintry mix, students might not know what will happen to their summer vacation until this winter shakes out.
Tofig wrote in an email to MyMCMedia, “We will have to see how the rest of the winter goes to determine if we will seek a state waiver. Last year, MCPS did earn a waiver from the state to allow for less than the state mandated instructional days.
According to the Montgomery County Public Schools calendar, the school system will add days onto the end of the school year, unless a waiver is granted by the Maryland State Department of Education. MCPS will not open on holidays, reduce spring break or cancel negotiated professional days.
The contingency plan, indicating when days will be made up if the number of emergency closings exceeds four days, is as follows, according to the MCPS website. If the school year is disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed—
5 days—the school year will be extended by one day to Monday, June 15, 2015;
6 days—the school year will be extended by two days to June 15 and June 16, 2015;
7 days—the school year will be extended by three days to June 15, 16 and 17, 2015;
8 days—the school year will be extended by four days to June 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2015; and
9 days—the school year will be extended by five days to June 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2015.
Dear Krista, It would have been nice to list the snow days.
I remember a lot of Tuesdays:
1)Tuesday 1/6
2)Tuesday 1/20
3)Tuesday 1/27
4)Tuesday 2/17
5)Thursday 2/26
6)TODAY Monday 3/2
So if Thur’s snow is bad then we will have days added in June?
According to MCPS, the school calendar won’t be adjusted until they determine how many snow days were used. At that point they could ask for a waiver from the state as they have done in the past.
I don,t understand how this is news or exciting for that matter. Big deal if the kids make up 1 day for every five, you ridiculous reports act like eeeks will be added. Move on and find some real nees like good things people do for others.
J, I’m not sure that you understood what you just read… Basically, we have reached the point from our last snow day (Monday) where we add a day in June for every day we miss… It’s a 1 for 1 situation now.
