SHA Prepares for Snow

Weather forecasters are predicting snow to come to Maryland’s western and central regions beginning tonight and lasting through Tuesday. The State Highway Administration (SHA) is preparing by pre-treating roads where snow is expected and loading trucks with salt and sand.

The Monday morning commute may be hazardous and SHA officials are strongly urging motorists to delay travel if at all possible.

“Making travel safe on the roads is a two way partnership between motorists and road crews,” said SHA Administrator Melinda Peters. “SHA crews can plow and clear more effectively if they have the time and room to get it done. The most important thing that motorists can do is to adjust driving schedules.”

Truck drivers can find refuge to wait out the storm at selected park and ride facilities across Maryland if snowfall totals approach the six inch mark. SHA will also station heavy duty tow trucks at strategic locations where trucks often become disabled during winter weather.

SHA’s emergency operations will be activated at the 24-hour Statewide Operations Center which serves as the storm command post.
