Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and other county officials held a news briefing at Congressional Plaza on a cold Dec. 8 to spotlight pedestrian safety during the holiday season.

Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger stressed the need to be safe in congested parking lots. Officials reminded motorists to be respectful of designated disability parking spaces and reminded residents that the fine for parking without a placard is $250.

Fire Chief Steve Lohr wants both motorists and pedestrians to slow down, look around and make sure you are seen. He said their goal is to prevent the 911 call. According to Police Captain Tom Didone, there are more than 400 pedestrian accidents a year in the county.

Following the news conference, police officers and firefighters distributed reusable shopping bags with parking lot safety and Respect the Space information to passersby.

From now through Christmas Eve, police and firefighters will visit some of the County’s busiest shopping areas to remind customers to drive and walk safely and respect the designated disability parking spaces.
