Celebrate American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month

The third annual American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month Social Powwow is scheduled to take place on Nov. 8 from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg.
Powwow is an all-inclusive social gathering recognizing and celebrating the rich heritage and cultures of American Indians and Alaska Natives.
The event is the result of a partnership between the city of Gaithersburg’s Multicultural Affairs Committee and Indian Health Service Headquarters’ Employee’s Association.
“Nothing is more expressive of our heritage than our dancers and singers. I think they are the living embodiment of American Indian people today,” said Jarrad Packard, president of the Indian Health Services Employee Association.
According to a press release, the city of Gaithersburg has hosted the free and open to the public event for the past two years. November was first designated as National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month by President George H.W. Bush in 1990.
During the evening, visitors will enjoy a variety of community events such as including traditional songs and dances, games, storytelling, silent auction, and a hand drum singing competition with a “winner-take-all” cash prize.
American Indian and Alaska Native artisans will be on site selling crafts, jewelry and other handmade items.
Packard said this year’s event has eight arts and crafts vendors and one food vendor.
“It will be a range of artistry from jewelry to contemporary Native artwork. We expect the food vendor to sell Indian Tacos and possibly corn soup and frybread,” Packard said.
