County Officials Honor Potomac River Heroes (PHOTOS)

PotomacRiverYoungHeroesRiceGabeDonatoJakeJonesCraigLeadsApplause 10-28-14Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice led a standing ovation on Oct. 28 for Jake Jones (center) and Gabe Donato (second from right) as they were honored at a County Council meeting for their heroic efforts back on July 27 along the Potomac River.

That’s when they saw Jacob Starrett (right), who dove head first into the shallow water, face down and unmoving.

According to a county account, Donato swam upstream to grab the unconscious Starrett and both Jones and Donato moved him out of the water, being careful to secure his head and neck.

Since the accident, officials said Starrett has recovered significantly from the serious injuries he suffered.

David Steckel (left) also presented awards to these young heroes on behalf of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
