Kneading to Learn at Johns Hopkins Rockville Campus (PHOTOS)
Students at Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus are showing their knead to learn Friday morning when they get the chance see the chemistry behind baking bread.
The Osher class, a lifelong learning program for senior citizens, will get enough materials from King Arthur Flour (flour, yeast, ect.) to go home and bake two loaves of bread, according to Ellen Poltilove, communications manager for Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus. The bread they bake will then be donated to Interfaith Works to serve at the upcoming Empty Bowls event scheduled for Oct. 23. Empty Bowls and Interfaith Works collaborate to fight hunger in Montgomery County.
“It’s a very fun and informative bread baking demonstration where Osher students will explore the differences amont wheat flours, learn the chemestry behind how ingredients work together and learn kneading and shaping techniques,” Poltilove said.
There are about 50 members of the JHU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute class participating. Osher provides educational courses and a social environment for retired and semi-retired adults. Osher students take courses at the JHU campus in Rockville.
