Silver Spring Meeting Raises Awareness Against Bullying (VIDEO)
Members of the community had the chance to share stories, experiences, and asked questions about bullying in schools.
The Bullying in Schools Town Hall meeting, held on September 28, was sponsored by Montgomery County Committee on Hate/Violence, the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights and Montgomery College.
The event focused on preventing bullying behavior, but also highlighted what parents, students, and educators can do if they ever come across the situation of bullying.
Johnnie Williams III, a motivation speaker and a graduate of Col. Zadock Magruder High School in Rockville, was the event’s moderator that had a panel of experts from Montgomery County State’s Attorneys Office, and Montgomery County Public Schools.
“Bullying starts off so many times as a game but it goes too far,” Williams III said.
Students from Sherwood High School where also part of the panel. Savannah Suser, Diane Trieu, Anya Mudryakova, and Emily Gilburt produced a video for a school project about standing up against bullying. In the video, Trieu is bullied by students, receives a threatening text message, a note stating that her life is pathetic, and finds herself alone. But the video then offers another end: what if one person offers to help?
“We wanted to make it really big and really something that people watch and they can relate to it,” Mudryakova said.
The students anti-bullying video was selected as a finalist in a global competition. They were invited to attend a leadership conference and Teen Video Awards show.
This was the third event part of the county’s efforts to raise awareness and educate residents on what they can do to prevent bullying. The second event– held in March- gave current and former MCPS students the chance to share the raw truth about bullying.
