Gaithersburg Leaders Discuss Process to Appoint New Mayor
Who will be the next mayor of Gaithersburg? We should know next month.
Long-serving Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz announced at last night’s City Council meeting that he is submitting his conditional resignation effective Nov. 10.
Katz noted that he is running unopposed for the District 3 Montgomery County Council seat in the Nov. 4 election.
In order to swear in a new Mayor on Nov. 10, City Attorney Lynn Board said the City Council will elect a new city mayor from its body at an executive session set for Oct. 6. The results of that vote will be announced to the public on Oct. 7, Board said.
The current five-member City Council includes Jud Ashman, Cathy Drzyzgula, Henry Marraffa, Michael Sesma and Ryan Spiegel.
Anticipating a vacancy on the City Council because of the pending vote for Mayor, Board said applications for the open City Council seat will be available today (Sept. 3rd), on the city of Gaithersburg’s website.
In addition to the application form, interested City Council applicants will also be asked to submit a financial disclosure form, a letter of interest, a resume and a statement of priorities or vision for the city.
Those applications, Board said, are due in her office by 5 p.m. on Oct. 6.
On Oct. 13, she said the City Council will meet in executive session to review the applications and to narrow down the candidates. She said the Council will then invite the selected candidates to the Oct. 27 Mayor and Council worksession.
According to Board, the goal is to announce the new City Council member on Nov. 3 so the appointee can be sworn in on Nov. 10 as well.
You can find more information about this process, on the city’s website.
