Save the Date: 25th Annual Farm Tour (Video)
Mark your calendars for Montgomery County’s 25th Annual Farm Tour and Harvest Sale on July 26 and 27.
Residents and visitors who participate in this year’s Farm Tour & Harvest Sale will get to show off their photography skills as they buy healthy local food.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the tour, participating farms will have special icons that shutterbugs can find and photograph. For more information on the photo contest, follow @mcfarmtour25 on Instagram, and tag photos with #moooco25. Categories include, but are not limited to: best group farm selfie, funniest farm baby photo (human or otherwise) and biggest squash purchase. The winning photos will receive prizes.
“The annual tour is such a special experience for people who might not otherwise visit the Agricultural Reserve,” said Jeremy Criss, manager of the County’s Agricultural Services Division. “This year’s photo contest will let visitors share their experiences at our beautiful farms with everyone they know. We’re really excited.”
Montgomery County started its own Farm Tour & Harvest Sale 25 years ago to help consumers get to know their farmers. Today, the demand for locally grown products is increasing rapidly, largely due to better-informed consumers. The event coincides with the state’s annual Buy Local Challenge, held during the last week of July
“Over the past several years, our customers, along with many others around the country, have become more knowledgeable about the products they consume and the importance of eating locally. People understand that our blueberries and apples offer many more benefits to the environment — and to the local economy — than fruit that’s shipped from across the globe,” said Tyler Butler, a third-generation farmer at Butler’s Orchard in Germantown.
“Our farmers are good stewards of the land, and they grow fantastic products. We love stories about new customers and families who come to the farms each year. And, the economic benefits of keeping these dollars in the community is significant,” said Steve Silverman, Montgomery County’s director of Economic Development.
