Pitching Poolesville: Town Adds Its Own Tagline (Video & Photos)
What’s great about Poolesville?
The community can tell you because they just voted on a slogan to sum it up. Poolesville’s new tagline- “Small Town Character, Down Home Charm.”
“It is a community that builds its own character. A lot of our character is growing families from the young to the elderly. We bring families in, young families, and we grow them and they stay,” said Valaree Dickerson, Poolesville commissioner and general town advocate.
The town is just 30 miles from D.C. with a population of 6,000. It’s seen its one grocery store, Selby’s Market move out, and is soon to get Tractor Supply Company to move in. The town sits in the middle of the county’s agricultural reserve and boosts one of the county’s top high schools. New families get a welcome bag from the town’s economic development commission when they arrive and Whalen Commons, the town’s main gathering spot, hosts movie nights and flea markets.
The town recently hired a Rockville firm to help market the town. The slogan is an add-on to that effort, according to Town Manager Wade Yost.
“We are doing a lot of outreach for economic growth, a new website and wayfinding signs. This a a spoke to that whole wheel to enhance the experience of visiting Poolesville,” Yost said.
More than 300 people voted online choosing from five different slogans for the town. The winning one captured 87 votes. On July 7, the town commissioners made it the official town slogan.
“The slogan is generalized somewhat, but perfect for our town,” Dickerson said.
To Yost, Poolesville’s amenities were hard to sum up in one marketing phrase.
“We have plenty to offer, the slogan is icing on the cake,” Yost said.
What was wrong with “Poolesville, only 346 to Cleveland”?
