Fireworks Attendance Figures Are Up This Year, Except in Rockville
UPDATED What do you get when you combine great weather and the Fourth of July in Montgomery County?
A great turnout at some of the area’s 4th of July fireworks shows.
Montgomery County Recreation Spokesperson Judy Stiles said approximately 33,000 people attended the Germantown Glory and Wheaton Sparkles events on July 4.
“The event is always well attended but we estimate that attendance was higher this year,” said Stiles. “The weather was perfect and was likely a contribution to the increased attendance.”
In Gaithersburg, city officials estimate 11,500 people were at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds to enjoy the concert, activities, food and fireworks on the Fourth of July.
“That’s up slightly from the previous year,” said Denise Kayser, Gaithersburg’s arts and events division chief. “And we had a great many more firework spectators in the surrounding vicinity. I’m always amazed by how many people watch from so many places!”
Kayser said there were no problems to report and the city of Gaithersburg has been receiving compliments about the event from spectators who attended the celebration.
Attendance was down at the city of Rockville’s 4th of July fireworks show at Montgomery College.
“We had about 25,000 attendees this year,” said Marylou Berg, spokesperson for the city of Rockville. “We typically see more than that, closer to 30,000. We think the long weekend afforded people the opportunity to go out of town for the holiday, which is why we saw a smaller crowd. “
