Need More Time? Local Organization Takes on Timebanking
It’s a way to share resources and local organization is hoping to spread the wealth, bringing the concept of “timebanking” locally.
Silver Spring Shares, a new group looking at new ways to connect the community, is hosting an informational meeting with local experts on the concept of “timebanking” on June 11 at 7 p.m.
“People can get involved by joining the time bank and sharing their time and skills in return for time and skills they need,” said MaryMurphy, an organizer with Silver Spring Shares. “Timebanks are a great way to build community. They help members get what they need by helping someone else,” she said.
Timebanking works through the exchange of services in a “payback” system. One hour helping someone else or another group, earns one “timebank hour.” The idea builds on the idea of one good dead leading to another.
Guest speakers at the Silver Spring Shares event include Patricia Dugan of the Columbia Community Exchange and Time Cohen Mitchell of the Greenbelt Timebank who will share their experiences setting up a time bank and getting people in the community involved.
“Our goal for the meeting is to learn more about timebanks and talk about starting one in Silver Spring,” Murphy said. “They are a testament to the idea that we all have something to share and offer to others.”
