Montgomery County Recognizes Excellence in Recycling Achievement

As part of its annual Recycling Awareness Week activities, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) recognized exceptional achievements in recycling, waste reduction, reuse, buying recycled-content products and educational efforts by local businesses, organizations, multi-family apartment and condominium properties, residents and individuals.

Honorees were announced at the annual Recycling Achievement Recognition Program held today at the Bethesda North Marriott and Conference Center.  John Kelly, columnist with The Washington Post who writes the five-day-a-week column called “John Kelly’s Washington,” was the keynote speaker, and together with County Executive Isiah Leggett, Council Vice President George Leventhal, Council members Roger Berliner, Nancy Floreen and Phil Andrews, and DEP Director Robert Hoyt presided over the award ceremony.

Recognition was given for efforts including: recycling more than 70 percent of waste generated; implementing increased recycling and waste reduction activities; and contributing service as volunteers to increase overall awareness and participation in the county’s recycling programs.

Awards were presented to the following recipients in several categories:

Outstanding Leadership Efforts to Increase Recycling Awareness

Ten individuals were honored for their efforts to increase overall awareness of recycling to others in the community, by volunteering and contributing their time and talents to support the County’s recycling efforts:

Alexander Chi, Boyds; Jeannie Chi, Boyds; David Godoy, Montgomery Village; Lincoln Hallen, Rockville; Pershawn Hamidi, Boyds; Donovan Irwin, Silver Spring; Derek Lam, Potomac; Paolo Nardone, Derwood; Benjamin Pham, Potomac; and Lily Pham of Potomac.

Multi-Family Property Excellence in Recycling

The following multi-family properties were recognized for their efforts that resulted in recycling 70 percent or more of their waste stream in 2013:

1200 East West, Silver Spring; The Bennington at Silver Spring, Silver Spring; Churchill Senior Living, Germantown; The Colonnade at Kentlands, Gaithersburg; The Forum Condominium, Rockville; and Victory Terrace, Potomac.

Multi-Family Property Outstanding Efforts in Recycling

Recognition went to the following multi-family properties, property management companies, and resident recycling committees that established and/or contributed to excellence in their on-site recycling programs:

The following resident was honored for his outstanding effort to improve the recycling program at the multi-family property where he lives, thereby increasing resident recycling awareness and participation:
