A Feast for the Eyes II at Riderwood

Early in my career in senior living, a very wise co-worker told me to “always remember that it’s about the people.”

He was right.  Nearly seven years later, I have met some of the most creative, talented people in any walk of life.  Whether they are residents who publish books after retirement or give back to the community in extraordinary ways, age is no limit when it comes to unleashing their magic.

This certainly holds true with residents at Riderwood, the Erickson Living community in Silver Spring.  For many of them, the design and creation of art is a passion.

“Orchid Tree,” a serigraph created by Peggy Zee, will be displayed at A Feast for the Eyes II, an artwork showcase to be held in May at Riderwood.

Their creativity and professional-level quality will take center stage during A Feast for the Eyes II, a showcase of original artistry in May.

I had the good fortune of attending the inaugural show in 2013, and it was impressive.  I met folks who worked as instructors, professional artists and even museum curators.  Their talent spoke through the artwork, but they were also eager to share their stories.

This year promises to be even more special.

Forty-two residents and employees will display over 165 pieces, including paintings, metal weavings, silk screens, photography and sculpture.  They will be available during the showcase to discuss the processes and stories behind their work with attendees.

Ms. Peggy Zee, a resident and one of the organizers of the event, previewed some of these beautiful pieces with me via her iPad.  I’ll do the same for you as a few of them are displayed with this blog.

Sponsored by the Riderwood Diversity & Inclusion Committee, the three-day event will take place during the following dates and times:

• Wednesday, May 7 from 2 to 7 p.m.
• Thursday, May 8 from 2 to 7 p.m.
• Friday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The gallery of artwork will be displayed at the campus of Riderwood in Maryland Hall (Montgomery Station Clubhouse).  Riderwood is located at 3120 Gracefield Road in Silver Spring.

The best part is that the showcase is open to the public with free admission.
