‘Montgomery al Dia’ Celebrates 100th Episode
Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett joined host Lorna Virgili for the 100th episode of radio show “Montgomery al Dia” on Radio America on April 8 to talk about the show’s impact as an ongoing tool to inform the County’s fast growing Hispanic community.
“Montgomery al Dia” was launched on April 3, 2012, by the County’s Office of Public Information as the County’s first Spanish language radio show on Radio América 1540 AM. The show is braodcast live every Tuesday at 2 p.m.
The live show is also recorded for television and is shown on a rotating schedule on County Cable Montgomery. The show format includes interviews, news, PSAs, and public call-ins. County government departments, County Council, and other County agencies collaborate to bring guests, news, and information.
The show is produced and anchored by Virgili, a 24-year veteran Spanish language broadcaster.
“The show’s main objective is to keep the Hispanic community in Montgomery County informed about all County programs and services so they can have easy access to registering, participating and engaging with local government,” Virgili said.
“Montgomery al Dia” received the 2013 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award as an innovative program that implemented civic education and public information.
“I am proud of every single show since we do an outstanding job on the pre-production, lining up guests and compiling relevant information that is delivered in a style that motivates County residents to take action,” Virgili said.
Virgili says she uses the show as an opportunity to make sure that the Hispanic community is aware of the services and programs available to them in the County.
“In the earlier part of the 2012 summer, Gabriel Albornoz, Director of the Department of Recreation was a show guest. Director Albornoz was interested in promoting a fund his department had of $1M to assist low income families in enrolling their children and youth in summer camps and programs,” Virgili said.
“Director Albornoz made the announcement and asked parents to call him directly. He later reported that in a period of 10 days approximately 80 percent of the one million dollar granted in financial assistance to families of Hispanic children and youth who would be participants as direct result of his radio promotion in ‘Montgomery al Día.’ As a result, hundreds of Hispanic children and youth spent the summer of 2012 engaged in positive activities sponsored by Montgomery County’s Department of Recreation,” she said.
The show is broadcast from the Radio America studios at 2730 University Boulevard in Wheaton and is also streamed live here.
