Brown Applauds Passage of Fairness for all Marylanders Act

Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown released the following statement after the General Assembly’s final passage of the Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2014 (SB 212), which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, credit, labor and employment. The bill passed the House today by a vote of 82-57 and the Senate by a vote of 32-15 on March 4.

“Everyone deserves to be treated and protected equally under the law, and today we are making that commitment clear. Right now nearly one in five transgender Marylanders have lost a job because of their gender status, and more than half have been harassed in a restaurant, store, or movie theater. Nobody should ever be forced to endure this kind of discrimination or harassment, and that’s why we’re taking this important step to protect all Marylanders. I want to thank all of the advocates, community leaders, and committed legislators like Delegates Clippinger and Cullison and Senator Madaleno, who never gave up in this fight for equality for transgender Marylanders.”
