Digital Impressions Exhibit at Kramer Gallery (Photos)

Digital Impressions art exhibit at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room in the Silver Spring Civic Building is on display Feb. 13 through May 23. The opening reception is March 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibition includes digital photography by three Montgomery County artists, Gordana Gerskovic, Margaret Paris and Jeff Sutton. Admission to the gallery is free and the public is invited to the opening reception.

The Kramer Gallery is housed on the first floor of the Silver Spring Civic Building, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Digital Impressions explores the impact of technology on photography. Each of the three artists featured in this exhibition employs a varying degree of manipulation to enhance color, remove compositional elements, or emphasize formal relationships. Many of the photographs resemble abstract paintings, privileging form, color, and line over subject. Jeff Sutton’s works are influenced by his recent travels in Istanbul. Their hyper-realism and saturated color result in enigmatic impressions that juxtapose sea, sky, and man-made structures, often with a mystical emptiness. Shooting exclusively with an iPhone camera and photo editing apps, Margaret Paris creates a series of vivid close-ups of plants and flowers. Bold contrasts and luminescent colors transform nature studies into sci-fi visions. Gordana Gerskovic magnifies her subject even more, finding mesmerizing patterns and textures in the
mundane.

Gallery Director and Curator Dr. Michele Cohen, explains: “digital technology has liberated photographers, enabling them to alter and enhance images with ease. I assembled the work in this exhibition to compare and contrast how three Montgomery County photographers have responded to the digital age.”
