There was a big turnout for the Kentlands 25th anniversary celebratory event, “Birth of a Community,” at Largent’s Restaurant and Bar on Feb. 16.

Approximately 150 people attended the event, including many elected and appointed officials as well as dozens of Kentlands residents and volunteers.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz and Mike Watkins, former Kentlands Town Architect, narrate video footage from the 1980s.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz and Mike Watkins, who served as Kentlands first town architect, narrated video footage from the late 1980s that included scenes from the Kentlands Design Charrette and featured clips with former Developer Joe Alfandre, Urban Planner Andres Duany and former Gaithersburg Mayor Ed Bohrer.

“It’s going to be a people friendly place,” said Joe Alfandre in the video clip from the design charrette some 25 years ago.

Today, Kentlands is an award-winning, neo-traditional community that serves as a model for new urbanism. It’s a place where people can live, work, go to school, shop, worship and play.

There are 25 events planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the community, which culminates with a gala planned for Feb. of 2016 and coincides with the date when the very first residents, Kentlands pioneers, moved into the community.
