County Council Agenda: A Preview

Council Ooffice BuildingThe Montgomery County Council at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28 will select a new Councilmember to serve the remainder of the term representing District 5. The position has been vacant since the resignation of Councilmember Valerie Ervin on Jan. 3.

The vote to select the new Councilmember will conclude the morning session of the Council’s regular general session. The session will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council.

Over the past 10 days, the Council interviewed 13 applicants for the District 5 vacancy. The new Councilmember will fill the remainder of the four-year term, which ends on Dec. 1, 2014. The new Councilmember will be sworn in at 4 p.m. Tuesday, following the conclusion of the afternoon session.

During the morning session, Councilmember Roger Berliner will introduce a package of 13 measures addressing long-term protection of the environment and the use of clean energy. All 13 measures have at least five Councilmembers as co-sponsors. Public hearings will be held on 11 of the measures on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and on the other two measures on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Gregory Wahl, a Montgomery County English professor who was named 2013 Maryland Professor of the Year, will be recognized by the Council during the morning session. Dr. Wahl, who is involved in numerous programs covering a wide range of subjects, was honored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

At approximately 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the Council will have its semi-annual meeting with the Montgomery County Business Development Corporation. Holly Sears Sullivan, president of MBDC, will present an update to the Council regarding MBDC’s recent and ongoing activities, including a demonstration of MBDC’s new GIS-based demographic analytics capability.
