Good Youth Media is Good Storytelling

MCM hosted a youth media workshop organized by the Gandhi Brigade and presented by Erica Ginsburg Executive Director and Co-Founder of Docs In Progress, with Sam Hampton, Teaching Artist and Co-Founder of Docs In Progress on January 9. This  3 hour workshop  included some Youth media sample videos and discussion about them ,  a documentary from Docs In Progress,  a PSA from Arlington Career Center, and a cute animation called Love Birds from Gandhi Brigade.

Youth Media in Montgomery is an exciting partnership between Montgomery County and local organizations that want to channel the power of media to engage young people with their community.   Kicking off the initiative,  members from eight youth serving organizations came together on January 9 for a workshop, “Good Storytelling is Good Youth Media.” Film Producers, Sam Hampton and Erica Ginsberg, coached the attendees on how to plan for media projects that achieve positive youth development outcomes. The event, which was held at Montgomery Community Media in Rockville, was organized by the Gandhi Brigade through funding provided by the County’s Office of Cable and Broadband.

Participating organizations included Asian American LEAD, African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation, Community Bridges, WORDE, YMCA Youth and Family Services, Passion for Learning, and Pyramid Atlantic, and Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers. Matt Boratenski from AFI came to the workshop to advise organizations on how to set up their projects. The media products range from animation, to poetry, to video will be showcased at the Gandhi Brigade Youth Media Festival on May 31 and will be featured on the Montgomery Community Media Youth Web Page.
