County Launching New Ads for Pedestrian Safety

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will launch a new public education campaign about the consequences of failing to practice safe pedestrian behaviors at a 11 a.m. press conference on Dec. 18.

The conference will take place in the parking lot of Carroll Apartments at the intersection of Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue, Silver Spring.

The new ads use an eye-catching graphic novel format in both English and Spanish. The first in a series, the ads will be displayed on Ride On buses and in bus shelters located in the original High Incidence Areas (HIA) identified by the County as having the highest concentrations of pedestrian collisions, which includes Piney Branch Road between Flower and New Hampshire avenues. Significant engineering improvements have been made in the area to encourage safe pedestrian and driver behavior.

Joining Leggett will be Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Navarro; Montgomery County Department of Transportation Director Art Holmes; Montgomery County Police Captain Thomas Didone, Reemberto Rodriguez, director, Silver Spring Regional Service Center; Anyesha Mookherjee, assistant district engineer for District 3, Maryland State Highway Administration; Erwin Mack, chair of the County’s Pedestrian, Bicycle and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee; and representatives from Casa de Maryland and Impact Silver Spring.
