Water Main Break in Chevy Chase
UPDATED Repairs were complete by 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 4.
Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) crews are responding to a 12-inch water main break in the 4700 block of Willard Avenue in Chevy Chase.
WSSC spokesperson Jerry Irvine said hundreds of customers are impacted by the break that was reported about 4 p.m. on Dec. 3.
Montgomery County officials said the Wisconsin Place Community Recreation Center in Chevy Chase is closed this evening because of the water main break.
Irvine said crews initially had some trouble turning off the valve on site so there is a lot of water in the area.
According to Irvine, WSSC crews who are onsite informed him that repairs will take a minimum of 12 hours. There are compacted utilities in this densely developed area so excavation will be slow going, said Irvine.
WSSC crews have trucked in water for area residents as part of customer care outreach efforts, which is routine, Irvine said, when customers are expected to be without water for six hours or more.
Although overall it’s been a relatively mild year for water main breaks, Irvine said November may have been the busiest month in ten years for WSSC because of the recent cold snap.
Crews were in Gaithersburg on Dec. 2 at a water main break in a townhouse community and on Friday, Nov. 29 a water main break in Rockville closed the county’s Animal Shelter.
