HHS Committee Meets on Child Care Subsidy Programs

The Montgomery County Council’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, with the County’s Commission on Child Care. Among the issues to be discussed are the status of child care subsidy programs and the possibility of establishing a universal pre-kindergarten program.

The HHS Committee, which is chaired by George Leventhal and includes Councilmembers Nancy Navarro and Craig Rice, will meet in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov .

The worksession on child care subsidies will include a discussion on possibly having increased funding for the Working Parents Assistance program.

The discussion on universal pre-kindergarten will touch upon the impact a government operated program would have on child care providers that offer infant and toddler care. Many of those providers lose money due to the costs associated with providing care, but they are able to become profitable through preschool, pre-k and school-age programs. Child care providers might decide that they are no longer able to operate if they do not have the ability to offer pre-k programs.
