Speed Cameras Vandalized in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County police report that three speed cameras were vandalized last night along Quince Orchard Road between Great Seneca Highway and Darnestown Road.

Police spokesperson Angela Cruz said police received a tip about the vandalism at 11:47 p.m. on Oct. 30.

According to Cruz, three of the cameras were spray painted on the lenses and two of them had swastikas on the back of them.

Cruz said two of the cameras are operated by Montgomery County Police and the third is operated by Gaithersburg Police.

She said the vendor came out on Oct. 31 and removed the paint and the cameras are functioning again.

Police have no suspects at this time. Cruz said possible charges include destruction of property and hate crime charges.

As of this year, police report 44 incidents of speed camera vandalism in 2013. The county operates 92 speed cameras at 268 designated locations throughout the county.
