Save Ten Mile Creek Coalition Disagrees with Planning Board Recommendation
The Montgomery County Planning Board completed its third and final worksession Oct. 24 on the Clarksburg Limited Master Plan for the Ten Mile Creek Watershed. The Planning Board voted to approve an option, which would allow Pulte to build up to 656 housing units. The Planning Board’s recommendation now heads to the Montgomery County Council.
A statement by Save Ten Mile Creek Coalition follows:
Today, the Planning Board has failed to put public interest and resource protection ahead of the interests of developers. This decision allows for significant degradation of Ten Mile Creek, our last, best creek and the cleanest source of water to Little Seneca Reservoir. This is unacceptable.
“Allowing more development by Pulte, Peterson and others puts our drinking water supplies at risk. Today’s decision paves the way for even more pavement in Ten Mile Creek in the future.
“Now, we urge the Montgomery County Council to right this wrong. We urge the Council to craft a plan that will protect Ten Mile Creek and our region’s drinking water.”
The Save Ten Mile Creek Coalition sent a letter to Planning Board Chair Françoise Carrier on Oct. 18 urging her to reject this more development-intensive approach in favor of protecting the resource. In May, Audubon Naturalist Society led the formation of the Save Ten Mile Creek Coalition to protect the DC metro region’s emergency drinking water supply at Little Seneca Reservoir by protecting Ten Mile Creek. The Coalition has grown to 19 member organizations, who collectively represent more than 10,000 Montgomery County residents.
