USG Hosts “Making Sense of the Civil War” Series

The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) Priddy Library will be among more than 150 sites across the nation to host “Making Sense of the American Civil War,” a free discussion series beginning Oct. 15 and running through December. The American Library Association and the National Endowment of the Humanities, with support from the Maryland Humanities Council, developed the series, which features a film screening, photo exhibit and seminars.

“We are proud to partner with the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities to offer our community an opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussion about a transformational time in our nation’s history,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Executive Director at USG. “This series will provide our leaders and students alike a platform for an open dialogue on issues that shaped and have shaped our community.”

Tuesday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m. (reception at 6:30 p.m.), located at the USG Auditorium: “Life in a War Zone: Montgomery County during the Civil War”
Film screening followed by moderated discussion led by Dr. Sunil Dasgupta, Program Director of UMBC Political Science; Dr. Andrew Nolan, Program Director of UMBC History, and Barbara Grunbaum, film producer. Presented in partnership with Heritage Montgomery.

Thursday, Oct. 24, 7 p.m., located at USG Priddy Library: The Shape of War
Discussion led by Brent Newton JD, Adjunct Professor of Political Science, UMBC & Adjunct Professor of Law, Georgetown University.

Thursday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m., located at USG Priddy Library: Imagining War
Discussion led by Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin, Associate Professor of History, UMBC.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 7 p.m., located at USG Priddy Library: War and Freedom: Civil Rights for African-Americans
Discussion led by Brent Newton JD, Adjunct Professor of Political Science, UMBC & Adjunct Professor of Law, Georgetown University.

Thursday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m. located at USG Priddy Library: Children and the Civil War
Discussion led by Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin, Associate Professor of History, UMBC.

Oct – Nov, 2013, 7 p.m. located at USG Priddy Library Interrupted Lives: Children and the Civil War
An exhibit that explores how the American Civil War affected the lives of children through historic photos, drawings and books.
