Spirit Selects Nikki Marshall Off Waivers

The Washington Spirit selected defender Nikki Marshall during the 2013 NWSL Waiver Draft, the league announced Monday. Marshall was the only player chosen from the 11 available.

“We are very excited about the prospect of bringing a player of Nikki’s quality and experience to our club,” Spirit coach Mark Parsons said. “She has the ability and character we want and need here at the Washington Spirit.”

Marshall, 25, started all 22 games and registered one assist in 1,871 minutes for during the regular season for the 2013 NWSL Champion Portland Thorns FC.

The Mead, Colo. native played every minute of the postseason for the Thorns and assisted on Tiffany Weimer’s game-tying goal in Portland’s 3-2 overtime win against FC Kansas City in the semifinals.

The Spirit also waived Lindsey Taylor and Holly King.

“Lindsey and Holly worked tirelessly on and off the field all season, were very professional, and always gave their best to the team in the opportunities they received,” Parsons said. “We thank both players for their contributions and commitment during their time here in the 2013 season and wish each of them the very best in the future.”

Both Taylor and King were eligible for the 2013 Waiver Draft, but not selected by the other NWSL teams. Other players not selected were (with previous team in parentheses): Ashley Phillips (Boston Breakers), Jo Dragotta (Boston Breakers); Sonja Fuss (Chicago Red Stars), Inka Grings (Chicago Red Stars); Tiffany Cameron (FC Kansas City); Kristina Larsen (Seattle Reign FC), Kristen Meier (Seattle Reign FC); Ingrid Wells (Western New York Flash).
