Panhandling Initiative (Photo and Video)

panhandlingeventLeventhalIkeGeorgeSpeaksA 9 9-9-13Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal (at the podium) and Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett on September 9 announced a new initiative to address panhandling in the County and improve safety.

“Give a Hand-Up, Not a Hand-Out” encourages people to text donations to social service charities rather than to give cash to street-side panhandlers soliciting for unknown personal use.

Also at the launch of the program were Director of Catholic Charities John Enzler, Executive Director of Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless Susan Sinclair-Smith and Executive Director of Bethesda Cares Susan Kirk.

By texting to 80077, residents can easily contribute $5 to a non-profit organization that will distribute the proceeds to those truly in need in Montgomery County.
