Pepco Announces Transmission Upgrade Project
Pepco officials are announcing that work to rebuild the East 230kV transmission tower line between the Burtonsville and Takoma Park substations will begin in June of 2014.
According to a news release issued by Pepco, the rebuilding of the transmission lines will take approximately 12 months to complete. The length of the right-of-way for the transmission lines is 9.9 miles.
The Burtonsville to Takoma Park transmission line serves Beltsville, Berwyn Heights, Colesville, College Park, Langley Park, Silver Spring, Takoma Park and a small portion of Norwood.
Pepco officials said the work is necessary to:
- Maintain the company’s commitment to safe, reliable electric service.
- Replace existing infrastructure.
- Support future load growth.
The majority of the work will take place along the transmission path and at the affected substations. In order to mitigate any community impact, Pepco will build temporary stabilized construction entrances to connect the roadways to the project area. Potential staging areas will be identified either in Pepco’s right-of-way or on substation property. Noise impacts are expected to be minimal.
A public meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Davis Hall at 9217 51st Avenue, College Park, Maryland.
