5 Things to Know Today, May 18, in Montgomery County

Today is Tuesday, May 18, and it is National HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. Learn about the HIV vaccine development on the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ website. In the meantime, here are five things to know in Montgomery County.

1. Council in Virtual Session:  The Montgomery County Council meets virtually at 9 a.m. today. Here’s a look at the meeting’s agenda. At the beginning of the meeting, Councilmember Craig Rice and the Education and Culture Committee will issue a proclamation in honor of MCPS Superintendent Jack Smith’s retirement.  The meeting will be televised on County Cable Montgomery Channels Comcast HD 996 and SD6, RCN HD 1056 and SD 6, and Verizon 30. Additionally, it will be live-streamed on the council’s Facebook and Youtube channels.

2. County COVID-19 Testing Clinics: Free COVID-19 testing is available throughout the county at 10 testing sites today. Health officials continue to stress the importance of testing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

3. School Board Meets: Montgomery County Board of Education’s strategic planning committee meets virtually from 3 to 5 p.m. Here’s a look at the agenda for the meeting.

4. Jawando to Announce Police Bill: Councilmember Will Jawando is holding a press conference at noon to announce a new community informed police training bill. Watch the press conference live on Jawando’s YouTube or Facebook page.

5. Bills Become State Laws: Gov. Larry Hogan is signing more than 200 bills into state laws today. Here’s a complete list.
