32BJ SEIU Responds to Supreme Court’s Travel Ban Announcement

The Supreme Court made a decision early Monday allowing parts of President Donald Trump’s travel ban on people from six predominantly Muslim countries.

The court did, however, make an exception to Trump’s travel ban stating that it “may not be enforced against an individual seeking admission as a refugee who can credible claim a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.”

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Jaime Contreras, vice president for 32BJ SEIU, the largest property service workers union in the country released the following statement:

“Allowing Trump’s Muslim ban to go into effect is not only wrong; it’s an insult to our values as a country of immigrants.

“As we have already witnessed at airports across the country, this ban will turn into a nightmare. Families will be divided; workers won’t be able to return to work; businesses will lose loyal employees and valuable customers. Students won’t be going back to school; whole communities will be disrupted and traumatized.

“This ban won’t make us safer but instead tarnish our nation’s reputation as a beacon of freedom. This un-American ban should be permanently suspended and banished into distant memory.

“As a union of 163,000 strong – including tens of thousands of immigrant members from countries all over the world, including people of Muslim faith – we continue to be committed to use our collective power in the days and months ahead.

“We will continue to fight for a better future for our families, prevent deportations, and protect immigrants, Muslims and refugees. Now, more than ever, we must unite across racial, economic and other lines to fight back against hatred, racism and bigotry.”
