13-Year Old Struck and Killed at Soccer Game
UPDATED at 1:30 p.m., July 3: A Silver Spring woman who does not have a Maryland driver’s license was behind the wheel of the car that struck and killed a 13-year-old girl as she watched a soccer game at Eastern Middle School, police said in a news release Thursday.
Police said Esperanza O. Vasquez, 33 of the 800 block of University Boulevard E in Silver Spring, had just moved into the driver’s seat after being a passenger in the car owned by Roland B. Delgado-Romero, 33 of 800 block of University Boulevard E in Silver Spring July 1. At about 8:30 p.m., police said the car struck a sign, a tree, a woman and 13-year-old Deborah Roxana Reyes Casasola of the 900 block of Northhampton Drive in Silver Spring. The teen was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.
Police said the other woman was transported from the scene at 300 University Boulevard East to the hospital with minor injuries.
Initially police did not know who was driving the car at the time of the accident and police said the three adults in the car refused to tell them. July 2, Vasquez called police to identify herself as the driver, according to the police news release. Vasquez does not have a Maryland Driver’s License or Maryland Learner’s Permit, according to police. Investigators are determining whether Vasquez has a valid license from another state.
At the time of the accident, Delgado-Romero, who holds a valid Maryland Driver’s License, was a passenger in the front seat, police said. A 26-year-old woman,. who holds a valid Maryland Learner’s Permit, was a rear passenger in the vehicle. Police have not identified her. Prior to the accident, the vehicle occupant with a Learner’s Permit was practicing her driving skills and driving the vehicle in the parking lot of Eastern Middle School before she switched seats with Vasquez. School video surveillance shows that the occupants of the vehicle switched positions prior to the accident but does not capture the accident. Because it is part of an ongoing investigation, police will not release the video.
At this time, no charges have been made in this case. The Collision Reconstruction Unit will consult with the State’s Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate charges in this case.

Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred at 8:32 p.m. on July 1 at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring.
According to a police account, officers responded to the parking lot of the school at 300 University Boulevard East for the report of a pedestrian collision. Police said the investigation indicates that the operator of a 2008 Ford Focus was driving in the rear parking lot of the school. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the parking lot.
Police said the vehicle struck a sign, a tree, a woman and a 13-year-old girl who were watching a soccer game. Police said the the woman was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Police have identified the teen as Deborah Roxana Reyes Casasola of the 900 block of Northhampton Drive in Silver Spring.
Police said they believe there were three people, all adults, in the Ford Escape. According to police, the occupants of the vehicle are not cooperating with investigators at this time in regards to who was driving.
Detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit believe there were spectators at the game who witnessed the collision but who left before police arrived to the scene. Investigators are urging those who witnessed the collision but who did not speak to investigators to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240.773.6620 or to call the police non-emergency number at 301.279.8000. Language interpreters are available and callers may remain anonymous.
